Definitions
rubens means 'red'. [See Picea rubens.]

Rubia [genus name] is derived from Latin ruber (red) with reference to the red dye obtained from the roots. [See Rubia.]

ruber is Latin (red) with reference to ... . [See Centranthus ruber.]

Rubus [genus name] is derived from Latin ruber (red) and is the classical Latin name for blackberry (Rubus fruticosus). [See Rubus.]

rupestris means 'of or from rocky places'. [See Carex rupestris, Potentilla rupestris, Puccinellia rupestris, Rumex rupestris, Umbilicus rupestris.]

Ruscus [genus name] is a corruption of bruscus (the old name used by herbalists) derived from Celtic brus (box) and kelen (holly) components, and ruscum is classical Latin 'butcher's-broom' (Ruscus aculeatus). [See Ruscus.]

Russelia [genus name] commemorates a Scottish physician and naturalist, Dr. Alexander Russell (1714-1768) who was physician with the Levant Company in Aleppo in Syria (south of the Turkish border) from 1740 to 1753. While out there, apart from learning Arabic and studying the local flora and fauna (he introduced two new plants to Britain), he studied the plague (a subject on which his advice would be sought in later years). Russell was a Fellow of The Royal Society. He published Natural History of Aleppo. [See Russelia.]

rusticana means 'of or from the countryside or wild places'. [See Armoracia rusticana.]

Ruta [genus name] is derived for some authorities from Greek ruta (repentance), for others from Latin ruta (bitterness, unpleasantness), and it is the Latin name of rue (Ruta graveolens). [See Ruta.]

ruta-muraria means 'rue of the wall'. [See Asplenium ruta-muraria.]
