Definitions
hypogaea means 'subterranean, underground or developing underground'. [See Arachis hypogaea.]

hudsonianum commemorates an English botanist and London apothecary, William Hudson (1730-1793). From 1757-1758 he was Resident Sub-librarian at the British Museum and was Demonstrator of Plants and Praefectus Horti at the Chelsea Physic Garden from 1765-1771. He became a Fellow of The Royal Society in 1761 and published Flora Anglica in 1762 (the first British work to adopt the Linnaeus system of classification and nomenclature of plants). In 1791 he became a Fellow of The Linnean Society of which he had been a founder. [See Ribes hudsonianum.]

hypoglossum is derived from Greek hypo (beneath, under) and glosso- (tongue) components. [See Ruscus hypoglossum.]

hypophyllum is derived from Greek hypo (beneath, under) and phyllo- (leaf) components with reference to the flowers being borne on the lower side of the leaf. [See Ruscus hypophyllum.]
